Part I of Constitution

Major Articles of the Constitution

Union and its Territory

  • Article 1: Union name and territory. It provides that India will be the Union of States of India.
  • Article 2: Admission or establishment of new states.
  • Article 3: Formation of new states and alteration in areas, boundaries or names of existing states. (Under this, Parliament has the right to form a new state and after the area, boundary or name of an existing state by passing the bill with simple majority.)
  • Articles 1 to 4 under Part 1 of the Constitution provide for the Union and its territories.
  • Article 1 states that India is a Union of States. This system makes two things clear: one is the name of the country and the other is the type of system.
  • The Union of India is not the result of any agreement with the states, so states do not have the right from the Union.
  • In Part-1 of the Indian Constitution, the entire territory of India is divided into three sections
  •                 1. States

                    2. Union Territories

                    3. Acquired Territories
